The Ronin Philosophy

Chop Wood. Carry Water.

Ronin Legal’s philosophy, “Chop Wood. Carry Water”, evokes the classic Zen koan:

“Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.”

It’s a reminder to focus on doing the simple things mindfully.

For thereby, through repetition and humility, does one achieve mastery.

In feudal Japan, a Ronin was a samurai warrior without a master. Ronin are often depicted in popular culture as proud men of principle who live by a strict code of honour, known as Bushido.

The image of the Ronin as a tragic, solitary and heroic figure is now classic, having been immortalized over generations of films, from Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sanjuro, to Chushingura and its Hollywood remake, 47 Ronin, to the Zatoichi and Lone Wolf and Cub films (which heavily influenced The Mandalorian TV series), to Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins and the Hollywood film Ronin starring Robert de Niro.
